What does it mean to truly be right with God? That question cuts deeper than we often admit. Romans 3:21-26 brings it into sharp focus, and the answer is both humbling and breathtaking. We all carry an instinct to measure ourselves against others, to balance our wrongs with enough good, to convince ourselves that we are decent enough. But when we hold our lives up against God's standard rather than our neighbor's, none of us walk away undefeated. The law of the Old Testament was never meant to be a ladder we climb to reach God. It was a mirror that shows us what is already broken within us. And what it reveals is that we cannot fix this on our own. The good news, the genuinely stunning news, is that God never expected us to. Romans 3 announces that the righteousness we could never produce, God Himself provided. This is not a new plan after an old one failed. The entire sweep of scripture, every sacrifice, every prophet, every promise, was always pointing toward Jesus. The cross is where justice and mercy met without either one being sacrificed. God did not overlook our sin, and He did not abandon us to it. He absorbed the full weight of it in Himself. That is the gospel, and it changes everything about how we understand our standing before God.
